Under pressure

The workload in newsrooms is increasing, whilst external pressure is mounting – including targeted attacks, both physical and digital, on media professionals. Reporting, journalistic standards and working conditions are being undermined, and opinions and people are being marginalised – this threatens press freedom and, ultimately, democracy.

This is precisely where the Mindful Media Lab comes in: we are building a network structure that brings together academia, practice, training, associations and experts to strengthen journalism. Because it is needed more than ever.

Our aim is to investigate stress and its consequences, develop concrete support services and thereby strengthen democratic resilience. For the question of how well journalism can function is closely linked to the question of how stable democratic public spheres are. Journalistic resilience is a prerequisite for democratic resilience. We see the strengthening of journalism as a societal task: dealing with hostility in the public sphere is not an individual challenge, but a structural one.

Why is that actually important? Social relevance

Stress in journalism arises at the interface between organisations and the public. It has repercussions for individual media professionals, for
editorial teams and for society as a whole. Those confronted with hate, incitement and deliberate denigration work under difficult conditions. This has consequences for visibility, choice of topics and participation: voices are silenced, perspectives are lost, and social diversity is weakened. At the same time, cost-cutting pressures and constant transformation are shaping the working conditions of many media organisations. Both factors influence how reporting is produced. Strong journalism is therefore a responsibility of democratic society.

Why is that actually important? Economic relevance

Why do we still need journalism when digital platforms mediate public communication and artificial intelligence appears to provide answers, context and guidance? The financial situation of many media companies is precarious. Additional pressures from both outside and within are exacerbating the situation: journalistic work is becoming less attractive, people are leaving the profession, traineeships are harder to fill, and sick leave is on the rise. At the same time, costs are rising, whilst loyalty, reach and relevance are coming under pressure. Only journalism that is financially viable and has a stable workforce can remain independent and fulfil its social responsibilities.
